My name is Shad Budge. I am a neuroethicist and human rights advocate residing in Chilliwack, BC, Canada. I’m currently homeless, living out of my broken-down truck. In early 2020, I lost my employment as a Sales Associate for Mitsubishi due to the pandemic. As a mask-exempt, unvaxxed, homeless man with numerous spinal injuries, I was finally able to regain employment in late 2022. This feat required nothing less than a mere 1189 combined resumes and applications submitted to a vast array of occupational opportunities. I now have two jobs: a part-time position at Walmart and a full-time position at Concentrix. I am generating as many hours as humanly possible between the two, and I plan on reacquiring normal shelter in the coming months.
I am currently suing the Fraser Valley Regional Library District, the Province of British Columbia, and Anytime Fitness for wrongfully terminating my ability to utilize their services due to my doctor-issued medical exemption from wearing face coverings. Their discriminatory actions critically diminished my quality of life, and directly induced many forms of psychological anguish and undue hardship. My ability to shower was severely reduced, transforming from a daily habit to a rare activity, occurring only once every 30-60 days. I developed a daily routine of visiting the library to temporarily escape the cold, harvest drinking water, use the washroom, charge my electrical devices, and pursue potential employment on the computers. This routine morphed into a criminal offense of trespassing due to the unlawful actions of the FVRL and RCMP.
There are five causes of action in the Library/Province suit: Infringements of Charter sections 7, 12, 15, as well as the tortious acts of negligence and misfeasance in public office. To view this lawsuit in its entirety please click here.
